EHC American Legion Post 158 “The Four Chaplains”

The Galloway Township American Legion Post 430 and Egg Harbor City Post 158 will hold the annual Commemoration of “The Four Chaplains” on Sunday, February 23, 2020 at the American Legion Post 158, 527 Philadelphia Avenue, Egg Harbor City, NJ at 3:00 P.M.

At the service, American Legion Post 430 and Post 158 will honor “The Four Chaplains”, the four World War II Army chaplains who gave up their life jackets and helped to save others on the United State Army Transport Dorchester on February 3, 1943 when the ship was torpedoed by a German submarine off of Newfoundland, killing 672 of the 902 officers and enlisted men, merchant seamen and civilian workers aboard.

The Four Chaplains included George Fox (Methodist), Jewish Rabbi Alexander Goode, Reverend Clark Poling (Dutch Reformed), and Father John Washington (Roman Catholic). As the soldiers on board rushed to lifeboats, these men comforted the wounded and directed others to safety. Their final selfless act of removing their life jackets and giving them to four young men created a unique legacy of brotherhood.

All are welcome to attend. Light refreshments will be served after the service.
